Better narration

Give the storyteller a better voice.

Every tale has a studio narration, and any tale can switch to the voice your device already carries instead. Every platform ships a thin default and keeps its full-bodied voices behind an optional download. Fetch one, and the same fables read very differently.

No on-device English voice found yet

Open a tale and press Listen once — some platforms only reveal their voices after the first spoken line.

Android

Google's speech engine has warm, local English voices — most phones ship with only the small one installed.

  1. 1

Play Store → install or update “Speech Recognition & Synthesis”

Google's text-to-speech engine. Samsung and Xiaomi phones often default to their own, thinner one.

  2. 2

    Settings → Accessibility → Text-to-speech output

On some phones: Settings → System → Languages & input → Text-to-speech output.

  3. 3

Set Preferred engine to “Speech Recognition & Synthesis by Google”

  4. 4

Tap the gear beside the engine → Install voice data → English

Pick your English — India, United Kingdom, United States. Each has several numbered voices; download two or three and compare.

  5. 5

Choose a voice, then set Speech rate to about 0.9

Kathavani slows itself for gentle passages, so a calm base rate suits the fables.

  6. 6

Force-stop your browser, reopen Kathavani, tap Listen once

New voices only reach the browser after it restarts. Then open the sliders and pick the voice.

Worth looking for

  • English (India) — voices ii, iii and iv are the fullest
  • English (United Kingdom) — voice iv reads narration well
  • Any voice without a network icon: those are on the phone, not streamed

Before you start

  • Voices marked with a cloud or network icon need a connection and will fall silent offline.
  • Samsung TTS voices work, but Google's English voices are noticeably less flat for long narration.

Done? Open any tale, tap the sliders beside the play button, and choose the new voice. Kathavani remembers it.

Listening without a connection

Keep the tales on the device.

A saved tale, studio narration included, needs nothing at all from the network — not on a plane, not on a train, not in a basement.
