Stratagem
Freed from an iron cage by a passing traveler, a tiger repays the mercy with an appetite — until a jackal asks to see exactly how it happened.
Do not let gratitude be argued out of you by a hungry tongue.

A brahmin walking home found a tiger pacing an iron cage on the roadside, abandoned by whatever hunter had meant to come back for it. The tiger wept with a fluency that would have impressed an actor.
TigerKind traveler, free me and I will owe you a debt no forest could hold. I have learned humility in this box. I only wish to see the sky as a grateful animal, not a caged one.
The brahmin, who believed the best of strangers on principle, lifted the bar. The door swung. The tiger stepped out, stretched at leisure, and looked at the brahmin the way a diner looks at a menu.
TigerI am, it turns out, still hungry. Gratitude is a fine coat, but it has never once filled a stomach.
The brahmin protested that this was no fair repayment, and, being a man of learning, proposed they ask three witnesses to judge the matter. A withered tree, an old buffalo, and a road each said the same thing in their own bitter language: the world repays kindness with use, and use with abandonment. The tiger's case grew fat on their testimony.
At the brahmin's lowest, a jackal happened by, sniffing at the argument like a stray at a feast.
JackalForgive an old fool, but I cannot follow this at all. A tiger, in a cage, and a man outside it — how does a story like that even begin? Show me. I want to see it exactly as it was.
The tiger, eager to prove his grievance to the last witness, stepped back inside the cage to demonstrate. The jackal looked at the brahmin the way one looks at a friend who has been slow to understand a joke.
JackalNow, brahmin. The bar. Quickly, before his gratitude finds a new argument.
The door closed. The tiger roared at a debt he had tried to erase and instead had only relearned. The brahmin walked on, wiser about which mercies deserve a second chance and which deserve a locked door.
